Courage Unfolds highlights violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Asia while showing their efforts to fight for equality, safety and decriminalization. It is a call to action for applying international human rights standards to sexual orientation and gender identity and makes a strong case for LGBT people to be protected by law, respected by society, and accepted by family.
Courage Unfolds is the culmination of two and a half years of gathering stories from sixteen countries across Asia, where LGBTIQ people contend with police harassment, religious homophobia, job discrimination, and family and community violence.
When and Where
Courage Unfolds, screened in over 20 countries including Cambodia, China, India, Philippines, Mongolia, Nepal, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia - and the USA is now available in DVD in Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, English, Khmer, and Mongolian. View an interactive map of past screenings »
What They Say about Courage Unfolds
LGBT people felt more understood, more recognized. They can identify with all the issues raised in the video. Straight people never knew that the LGBT community faced such problems. Watching the video, they got a real sense of the privilege that straight people have. They became allies and made strong supportive statements in the Pride 2011 video that our Center recorded.”
– Cambodia Center for Human Rights
"Travelling to various places in the country to screen Courage Unfolds, I saw how the film has inspired many people in various ways. In one of the most impoverished cities in the Philippines, gay beauty pageant organizers decided to form a coalition after the screening to advance LGBT human right in their future events. People felt encouraged to join LGBT groups and donate funds to local LGBT groups.”
– Ivanka Custodio, project coordinator, Lesbian Activism Philippines (LeAP Inc.)
"Courage Unfolds jump-started a rich discussion about the overlap between LGBT rights and reproductive rights. Our staff knew little about the history and progress of LGBT activism in Asia. The film helped us to draw the connections and allowed our LGBT staff to talk more openly about their own experiences. It was valuable too for those of us who advocate at the UN to be introduced to the framework and the organizations featured in the film."
– Ipas, international NGO for women’s sexual and reproductive rights
