Izmir: Candle Light Vigil to Honor the Murdered Transgender Activist
04/29/2010
Following the murder of another transgender person in Izmir earlier this week, the members of local LGBTT group, (Black Pink Triangle Association or as it is known in Turkish, Siyah Pembe) staged a silent protest and a candle light vigil in Izmir to honor the memory of their fallen member who was brutally killed in what seems to be a serial murder. They carried out signs that read "end the hate crime," "enough is enough," and "death is not the solution we want." Close to 100 people participated in this ceremony, which ended peacefully. Members of Feminist-Iz and SDP (Socialist Democracy Party (Sosyalist Demokrasi Partisi) were also present at the ceremony.
The latest victim, Azra, was murdered by a gunshot to the back of her head. Azra was one of the first members of the Siyah Pembe, which the local Izmir government has been trying to shoot down through a law suit.
