Pink Life: Trans Remembrance Meeting in Ankara, Turkey

IGLHRC believes that a vital part of our mission is supporting the work of activist organizations and allies by disseminating important information on human rights issues affecting LGBT communities worldwide. To this end we are posting this article from Pink Life.

We, trans individuals are subjected to hate murders. Hate speech in media continues to exist intensively. Police continues to use transphobic violence against trans individuals. Judicial authorities reward our murderers with sentence decreases. Law-makers and decision-makers ignore us and our democratic demands. Transphobic hatred and discrimination are widespread in areas like education, health, employment and access to services. Our freedom of movement is prevented, our freedom of expression is limited and we are faced by social pressure, social exclusion and violence. In short, we are being "hated" just because of our existence!

Pink Life LGBTT Solidarity Association continues its activities against hate crimes towards transgenders since 2006 with "Trans Remembrance Conference" that will be held between 22 – 28 November 2010, in Ankara.

We will focus on transphobia and "hatred" in fields like sex work, discriminative legislation, sexually transmitted diseases, international trans rights activism, politics, arts, transfeminism together with several academics, lawyers, artists, writers, parliamentarians, journalists and activists both from Turkey and abroad.

We, as trans rights activists from Turkey will organize the "Trans Network Meeting" where we will discuss our problems, demands and strategies to solve these problems by coming together for the first time.

Within the university campuses of Ankara, with the support of university lGBT groups, we will discuss "hatred" and listen to the demands of the youth as regards to transphobia and "hatred".

Through movie screenings and exhibitions which are on trans issues, we will try to make "transphobic hatred" to be discussed within public.

We will make our problems and demands more visible through a great march against "transphobic hatred".

In short, we will show that we as trans individuals exist and that we will struggle in a more stronger way with a more democratic, just and an egalitarian world demand.

We invite all civil society institutions, activists and all social groups and their representatives that are sensitive about the topic to our conference.
