Killings and Violence Against Women based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Tuesday, 5 March at 4:30pm
Armenian Convention Center, Guild Hall
630 Second Ave at 35th Street, New York

Around the world, people are targeted for violence and discrimination because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity. Lesbians, transgender and other gender non-conforming people – in both the global North and South – are particularly at risk. This violence, including rape, extrajudicial killings and torture is omnipresent and is often undocumented and under-reported. Panelists will discuss research and activist and UN responses.

Tamara Adria (Diverlex Diversidad e Igualdad a Través de la Ley, World Trans Secretary of ILGA), Lynn Darwich (Meem), Monica Tabengwa (Human Rights Watch), Kim Vance (Arc International). Moderated by Cynthia Rothschild (COC Netherlands)

Organized by Arc International, COC Netherlands, Transgender Europe. Sponsored by Astraea, Association of Women Rights in Development (AWID), Center for Women's Global Leadership, IGLHRC, International Planned Parenthood Foundation, Human Rights Watch.

Gender-Based Violence and Religion: An Intersectional Perspective

Thursday, 7 March at 8:30am
UN Church Center, Hardin Room, 11th floor
777 First Avenue at 44th Street, New York

Religious sexual fundamentalisms are the increasing source of extreme violences against women, girls, and LGBT people across the globe. Sexual fundamentalists seek to control reproductive rights, contraception, comprehensive sexual education and the LGBT right to exist, as they enforce marriage and oppressive traditions.

Hossein Alizadeh, Program Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa at IGLHRC will join Pam Spees of Center for Constitutional Rights, Sally MacNichol of CONNECT NYC and Patricia Ackerman of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in a panel discussion.

Organized by Fellowship of Reconciliation and co-sponsored by IGLHRC and CONNECT NYC.

Human Rights Fact-Finding: The Emerging LGBT Movement in Haiti

Wednesday, 6 March at 6:00pm
New York University Room 206
Vanderbilt Hall
40 Washington Square South, New York

While much has been written about gender-based violence in Haiti—particularly since the earthquake—the country’s LGBT community has gotten less attention. Concurrently, increased discrimination and abuse has helped to create a movement of activists organizing to confront abuse and address the unique challenges faced by their community.

Moderator: Jessica Stern (Executive Director, IGLHRC)
Panelists: Lisa Davis (IWHR Clinic, CUNY, MADRE), Charlot Jeudy (Haitian LGBT activist, President of KOURAJ), Jeannine Melly (IWHR Clinic), Meg Satterthwaite (CHRGJ, NYU School of Law)

To RSVP, email watnea@exchange.law.nyu.edu by 5 March.

Refreshments and snacks will be served.

Organized by MADRE and co-sponsored by IGLHRC, the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies and the Rutgers Center for Global Women's Leadership.
