Latvia: LGBT March Should Take Place

05/15/2009

LGBT organizations and supporters from three Baltic states organized a joint march in Latvia's capital Riga on May 16, 2009. The march was initially authorized by the Riga City Council, and then banned following political pressure from some City Council members.

IGLHRC joined Amnesty International and others in appealing to the prime minister of Latvia to intervene and respect the rights to free assembly and expression.

The organizers challenged the City Council's decision in court and won.

A few hundreds people from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and other countries marched without incident.
