Meet Our Interns
2013 Fellows and Interns
Cheryl D'Souza
Cheryl D'Souza is originally from Malaysia, and is currently a rising senior at NYU, pursuing a degree in Public Health. She has previously taught workshops through Peer Health Exchange and was a program coordinator for the International Rescue Committee's Saturday Learning Series. She has also worked as an intern in a Malaysia-based business radio station and a Malaysia-based NGO, advocating for child's rights. Cheryl hopes to work in violence interruption following graduation.
Cristina Dominguez
Cristina Dominguez received her MA in Women’s Studies from San Diego State University in August of 2012. During her graduate career Dominguez was the Safe Zones graduate supervisor at SDSU and a Teaching Associate in the department of Women’s Studies. Her most recent scholarly work, "'Poetry is Not A Luxury': Queer Poetry as a Grassroots Activist Medium in South Africa", examines the activist use of poetry by non-white, queer, young women in South Africa. Dominguez has taught humanities based Introductory Women's and Gender Studies courses at San Diego State University, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, North Carolina.

Derek Demeri
Derek just completed his first year at Rutgers University. He will continue his degree at City University in London studying International Politics & Sociology beginning this fall. He served as a staff writer for Sex, Etc., a national teen-written magazine on sexuality. He also founded and led his high school's Gay-Straight Alliance and Anti-Bullying Campaign.
Pedro Garcia
Pedro Garcia is currently pursuing a master’s degree in political science and communications at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po Paris). He holds a BA from the same institution with a minor in Latin American studies, and has studied international relations and social sciences at the Autonomous National University of Mexico and at the University of Chicago. He has previously worked as a diversity intern at the Human Rights Campaign and at an independent LGBT news website based in Paris.
Catherine Hoge
Catherine graduated from UC Berkeley in 2010, and will begin her second year at Harvard Law School in the fall. Catherine was a member of the Student Coalition for Marriage Equality at Berkeley, and worked for Center for Community Solutions, a San Diego based domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy and prevention organization, following graduation. She hopes to work on LGBT and feminist issues following law school.
Ginette Sims
Ginette is entering her final year at Williams College where she studies Anthropology. She has led and organized a necessities drive for the women and children of the New England based Elizabeth Freeman Center, a non-profit organization which provides shelter and counseling services for individuals who have been the victims of domestic abuse and is also a member of the student committee which called for new and transparent disciplinary procedures in cases dealing with sexual assault and discrimination based on sexuality, gender, and race.
