Trans Support Inititative-Uganda Comemorates The International Women’s Day

03/12/2013

IGLHRC believes that a vital part of our mission is supporting the work of activist organizations and allies by disseminating important information on human rights issues affecting LGBT communities worldwide. To this end we are posting this Press Release from Trans-Support Initiative Uganda

Today the 08th of March 2013, Trans Support Initiative-Uganda a Transgender and Intersex Organization in Uganda joins the rest of the world to commemorate the International women’s day under the UN Theme “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women”.

We take this day to celebrate the achievements of women like the recent South Korean elected President, the participation of Martha K in the just concluded Kenyan elections and we also remember the injustice, violence, discrimination and murders that have occurred to transgender people, colleagues, relatives and friends as a result of hate crimes, domestic violence and mob justice.

It is not been long since we have witnessed Trans women being undressed on National Television, the mis- conduct of police while arresting women suspect like Mrs. Ingrid Tulinawe and Kampala woman Mp Hon Nabira Ssempala, and the loss of arms to a lady and children in Mityana as a result of domestic violence.

It is unfortunate and unbearable to see that Uganda still has policing system and a government that do not value or understand humanity and Human Rights.

We feel that not protecting and denying human rights to Transgender people and women in Uganda just because they are different is a clear breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Constitution of Uganda, which clearly states that no person is above the law meaning we are all equal to access the right to justice and dignity as Ugandans in this document.

We therefore call on the government of Uganda to respect and put in practice the Universal declaration on Human rights, the Constitution of Uganda and the domestic violence Act 2010, by protecting marginalized groups like the Transgender and intersex people and women in Uganda from physical and verbal abuse, denial to economic justice, domestic violence, unlawful arrests and mob justice.

We call on the cultural and religious leaders to promote love, respect and unity as pillars enshrined in our cultures and religions to have a violence free Uganda.

We also call on the different stakeholders and actors like the civil society Organizations, Human Rights Organizations and development partners to mainstream Transgender and women’s protection and finding remedies of rehabilitation to the already existing victims of sexual and gender based violence, rape, physical and verbal abuse and mob justice.
